This month we are going to introduce you to our new product range, Dermalogica. The story begins in 1986 in Los Angeles. Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American “esthetician” industry, recognised that continuing skin and body therapy education was practically non-existent in the United States. While her training had been comprehensive and serious, US students entered the industry licensed yet under-trained, and worse, under-respected.

Jane put her education in action, opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI). She invited licensed skin therapists to get hands-on with the postgraduate training so critical to making them competitive in the business. Today, IDI is considered the international gold-standard for postgraduate skin and body therapy training with 37 locations worldwide.

While teaching at IDI, it didn’t take long for Jane to realize no product line embraced her belief of skin health as opposed to “beauty,” so she developed her own. And in 1986, Dermalogica was born. The vision was clear – a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances) that would improve skin health, and were only available from qualified skin care professionals trained at The International Dermal Institute.

Their philosophy is simple,  the brand is not pretty (Or beautiful. Or pampering. Or luxury.) Dermalogica is far too interested in guiding you to a new level of skin health fitness! So, while packaging may not be designed to color-coordinate with your bathroom, you can always be sure that the ingredients will work  wonders for your skin and deliver excellent results.

During the difficult and stressful time we are facing during this highly unprecedented time, we want to share two of the most important factors to help you towards achieving a beautiful skin; Using the correct skin care for your skin type and current conditions and SLEEP

Your consciousness may clock out when your head hits the pillow, but it’s during sleep that many internal body functions, including those that keep skin looking healthy, shift into overdrive.

DNA repair, cellular detox and cellular production all rev up while we lie idle between the sheets. “The body uses sleep time for internal housekeeping,” explains Annet King, Director of Global Education Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. “This is when we process nutrients, detoxify, renew and recharge, so giving your body ample time to accomplish all this is critical for keeping your skin — not to mention your overall health — in peak condition.”

Bottom line: If you’re not getting enough sleep — an average of seven hours a night — you are depriving your body of its requisite downtime. This accelerates the skin aging process and, as King says, “If your body is chronically deprived of sleep, the effects become physically and visibly noticeable.”

During the day, skin is busy fighting off invaders while defending against and neutralising environmental causes of stress, but at night, while we sleep and blood flow increases, skin switches from protection mode into rapid-repair mode. So if we want our best skin ever, it’s important to do all we can to maximize its recovery time.
