winter skin care at City Retreat Salons Spas in Newcastle Jesmond Gosforth

During these cold winter months it’s important we keep up with our skin care routines.

The harsh weather can play havoc on our skin and cause numerous problems, for many skin types. It’s important that we keep on top of our routine to ensure our skins are clean, exfoliated and hydrated. These three simple steps will help to keep your skin functioning correctly and ward of those harsh effects the severe winter weather may cause.

Why not try doing your home facial again, by following these simple steps set out below.

Firstly, get everything together that you need for your pro-facial.

Hairband

2 Bowls of HOT water

4 Face Cloths or Wash Mitts

Soothing music in the background is optional

Now let’s get started! Pop on your hairband (get all that hair away from your face.)

Step One: Deep Clean

Using your favourite cleanser (mine is ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, glides over your skin and smells divine!) Cleanse with warm water and remove with a wash cloth. Do this TWICE. A double cleanse ensures all make-up and debris is removed efficiently from the skin.

Step Two: Exfoliate

You can use a granular scrub or an enzymatic peel, which ever you prefer. A scrub will need to be massaged gently into the skin. As you go, the dead skin cells will slough off the skin leaving it smooth and radiant. An enzymatic exfoliator will need to be left on the skin (follow manufacturer’s instructions for how long). This will nibble away at your dead skin cells so when you remove the product with your nice clean wash cloth, you will remove the dead skins cells too. Use your toner to remove final traces – super cleansed and smooth skin.

Step Three: Massage

You can use 3 of the ELEMIS Cellular Recovery Capsules (pink for dry, dehydrated or mature skin, or green for combination to oily or blemished skin). You can use any facial oil you wish as long as it gives you slip to ensure we do not drag the skin.

Pre-warm the facial tissues prior to massage with a nice warm wash cloth as this will help the muscles to relax and be responsive to your massage – ENJOY!!

Always working upwards and outward to follow the flow of the lymphatic system. The main lymph nodes of the face are in front of the ears, under the chin and jaw bone. We always want to direct the flow to those areas.

Massage for as long as you wish, at least 5 – 20mins

Step Four: Treat

Choose a Face Mask that matches the needs of your skin today. Our skin conditions vary with age, environment, lack of sleep etc.

Things that face masks address are generally: Dehydration, lack of radiance, ageing, blemishes or perhaps acne. So, whatever you are faced with there will be a face mask that will help your skin condition, so choose a mask that meets what your skin needs on the day.

Again, follow the manufacturer’s instructions as different masks require different timings.

My favourite is ELEMIS ULTRA SMART Aqua Infusion Mask. This is ideal for my skin as it’s unique ‘Aqua Shuttle Technology’ and ‘Ultra Smart Line Fighting Complex’ ensures I stay hydrated throughout the day and helps keep those lines and wrinkle away!! (You can actually use this up to 3 times a week if you need to. I use it once a week as my Sunday Treat!!)

Once your mask has worked its magic, remove with your wash cloth and tone over again.

Step Five: Choose Your SERUM

I LOVE SERUM. A serum will sink deep into your skin. Treating, Repairing or Hydrating your skin at a deeper level, so, I always recommend you use a daily serum BEFORE you moisturise. One for the eyes, and one for the rest of your face, neck and décolleté.

Finally – Moisturise and Protect

Eyes with a suitable eye cream. Face, Neck and Décolleté with your chosen moisturisers (For me it is Pro-Collagen Marine Cream from ELEMIS as my moisturiser and also a neck and decollate balm or cream).

Choose a moisturiser that suits your skin type – Anything does not go here!! You need a moisturiser that will help to treat your skin and also give you a layer of protection in the morning or a night cream that will treat your skin while you sleep in the evening. Choose one that matches your skin type and current skin conditions. (My favourites are AM: ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, I’ve been using this for over 15 years, and it WORKS!! Now available with an SPF 30 too. PM: ELEMIS Plumping Pillow Mask, gorgeous!! Beauty Sleep in a Jar with AMAZING RESULTS).

I hope that helps you pop that expert touch to your pro- facial.

Try to do this at least once a week to help you look and feel your best. HAPPY HOME FACIAL

TOP TIP – Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate.

Try to include an exfoliation in your routine EVERY 3 – 4 days. This keeps skin smooth and will help you other products sink into the skin more efficiently too. Any questions, or need some skin care advice? Please don’t hesitate to ask. Looking forward to seeing you again, Lesley and the Girls xx
